Hope rising in the 2nd tier
On that date the presidential candidates will probably be decided in the renovated Super Tuesday primary system. If you want to have any input into the process, now is the time to get involved. As Rudy Giuliani continues to dominate in the polls, the shock conservatives felt at last November's elections has deteriorated into lethargy. While most of us could hold our noses and vote for John McCain, true conservatives simply will not go for Guliani-no way, no how. It's time to look past the so called top tier candidates. It's time to look at U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, a true conservative. Brownback is a Kansas native, a Catholic of German descent and still in his first marriage. He is the father of five children, two of whom are adopted. He came to the Senate in the seat vacated by Sen. Bob Dole in 1996. He believes in term limits and will not run for re-election when his current term expires. Based on his record, Brownback can be described as a man who cares about the poor, the downtrodden and the unborn. He identifies himself as a social conservative. He led the charge against the evil of using children in American as sex slaves and crafted the Trafficking Victim Protection Act of 2000. President Bill Clinton signed the bill into law in October of that year. His idea on how to fix our truly confusing tax system is intriguing. Allow those who like it the way it is to continue on, while giving those of us who hate it the option of a flat tax. Sen. Brownback opposes judges who legislate from the bench. He supports marriage as between one man and one woman. He has vowed to never raise our taxes. Furthermore, Brownback has spoken out against the genocide in Darfur and visited the area. Most importantly, in this dangerous era, Brownback has pledged to ". . . secure our boarders and win the fight against militant Islamist extremists." For the most part, the liberal media, who see him as the candidate of the religious right, have ignored Brownback. However, the New York Times called him "one of the most fascinating-and in many ways admirable-politicians in America today." The idea Brownback is too conservative for the Republican "big tent" is patently absurd. The professional pols in the Republican Party err in their thinking if they believe we need a moderate with broad appeal a la Giuliani. Every Republican elected to the presidency in the last 30 years has been a true conservative, except George H.W. Bush. Bush 41's victory was, in essence, a third term vote for President Ronald Reagan. Because so many states will cast their primary votes Feb. 5, 2008, the succeeding months will be one long denouement for Republicans in Illinois. Illinois is such a "blue" state it will in all probability go for a Democrat in the general election. Therefore, now is the time to get out and work for a candidate whose views you can support. If we can get Brownback nominated, hopefully conservatives in Missouri, Ohio and Florida will put him over the top in the November general election. Brownback finished a respectable third in the recent CPAC straw poll in Washington, D.C., and was endorsed by Bobby Schindler, brother of Terry Schiavo. Brownback recently gave the keynote speech at a function hosted by Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family. In announcing his candidacy two months ago he said this: "Our land needs healing. Our people need hope. Our world needs help." Traditional values Republicans need the same things: Healing, hope and help. Let's pray Sen. Brownback can convince us to soldier on. Anne T.
