Metro Chrysler closes doors
After about 10 years of selling cars, Metro Chrysler ended its tumultuous relationship with Columbia on May 4 when the dealership suddenly closed up shop. Located off Illinois 3, the dealership has had various problems throughout the years, from their tactics in selling cars to credit problems. It seems finances finally did them in when representatives from Chrysler Credit appeared in the store May 4 to force the closure of the store. "From what I understand, the company (Chrysler) had issues with Metro and forced them to close," Columbia Economic Development Coordinator Mike Hemmer said. But a new dealership quickly swooped in to take their place, as Royal Gate-Chrysler Dodge-Jeep will open at the location this week. Based out of Ellisville and Moscow Mills, Mo., the dealership hopes to remedy some of the problems Metro had over the years. Rumors circulating throughout Columbia have indicated Metro allegedly owed several businesses money and couldn't pay their debt. Besides this, over the years the Columbia Police Department indicated 120 complaints had been sent to the Illinois Attorney General, the Better Business Bureau and police regarding the company's techniques. These complaints came to a head in 2005 when the Illinois Attorney General's Office investigated the dealership because of rumblings they were allegedly using inaccurate advertising and bait and switch tactics when selling cars. While the company did retool personnel after these complaints, it wasn't enough to continue their relationship with Columbia, which could hurt the city for a short while. "They have been one of the top dealerships in the area for a while," Hemmer said. "Having them down a couple of weeks will hurt our tax revenues." But Hemmer thinks Royal Gate will take Metro's place in no time. "I think in the long run, Royal Gate will boost revenues," Hemmer said. "I look forward to working with them." |
