Or, more appropriately, start your fingers.
At least this would have been apt for the Jan. 25 Cub Scout Pack 325 Pinewood Derby, which was hosted at Christ Community Lutheran Church in Columbia.Tiger Cubs, Wolf Cubs, Bear Cubs and Webelos intermingled with their wooden concoctions for the chance to take home first place in a variety of categories. These included speed, car design and paint scheme, with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prize for overall speed throughout the den.
The event was organized by 325 Pack parent Dennis Hoguet, who separated the cars into groups of three with three heats for each car. The winner of each age group-1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th-5th grades-moved onto the finals.
Then one race determined the overall winner, which was Tiger Cub Nicholas Bierman, beating out Webelos Scout Andrew Hoguet and Tiger Cub Cole Richey.
Pack 325 leader Debbie Volmert said the event was a success, as an emphasis was put on the Cub Scouts this year.
"All the boys had a terrific time," Volmert said. "We kind of made a suggestion this year to have the kids paint and design the cars themselves instead of their dads because we wanted them to get more involved.
"You could tell because the cars weren't as slick looking, but the boys put in a lot of effort."
As far as the competition goes, Volmert didn't think this year's Derby was as serious as years past.
"I just felt like they had a lot of fun this year," Volmert said.

Tiger Cubs

Wolf Cubs
Speed: Tyler Hoguet, Nick Bahr and Brett Froess.
Car Design: Daniel Mehrmann, Nick Bahr and Drew Worley.
Paint Scheme: Jack Goacher, Jake Koenigstein and Drew Rawlings.
Bear Cubs
Speed: Andrew Veit, Hayden Anderson and Bryant Goacher.

Webelos
