Want to get noticed? Set a world's record and notify the good folks at Guinness Book.

That's the theory Dave Gregson and his Marketing II class had for their 2008 semester project.

"Mr. Gregson kept saying we should go for something bigger, something challenging that would draw attention. Marketing is about getting noticed," Marketing II student Jeff Harrison said. The great glowstick hook-up at Gibault's gym April 5 could instead have been a water-balloon fight or some other zany if unprecedented activity, Gregson said.

"We discussed what type of record we wanted to set or break and there were a lot of things that had been done. But we recalled last year our class used glowsticks for the fruit sale we did and it worked well. We submitted 'longest glowstick chain' (to Guinness) and it came back 'no record,' so we decided on that," Gregson said.

The first step was to find a company who would sell a large number of glowsticks for a not-for-profit cause. The class identified Extreme Glow of Tupelo, Miss., and talked the company down to $13 a case.

"Then, the class solicited sponsors from the community and they got a great response. People here have a real heart for (cancer research)," Gregson said.

"They created and put out fliers, contacted the radio, TV and newspapers. They did the greeting at the event. It was an overall great learning experience," Gregson said.
