Columbians, push the warning signal. There is no time to sit and wait for an event that happens once every 150 years.

So gather all those photographs and memories because the Celebration 2009 Committee is putting together a book.

The city has been planning its sesquicentennial celebration for awhile now and is making sure the event is captured for eternity by asking current and former residents of Columbia to submit photographs, documents and written recollections for possible insertion in the book. The items can be from any time in Columbia's history up to the present day, with an emphasis on photos and recorded memories of historical significance.

The committee will also consider written descriptions and photographs of everyday life from all time periods.

Committee co-chairman John Conrad said the group is in the embryonic stages of planning the book.

"We haven't really gotten anything yet but want to encourage anyone with a historical document to contact us," Conrad said.

Conrad said the group is hoping to have the book completed by the end of the celebration, which will take place July 3-5, 2009, the same days as the 1959 centennial celebration was hosted.

"We aren't sure if we want to add the celebration events in the book yet or not," Conrad said.

As far as the actual events go, the Celebration Committee isn't sure what they will be but said 2009 will be chock full of them.

For those interested in submitting a photograph or document, there are several options. They can be e-mailed to celebration2009@htc.net or mailed to Celebration 2009 Committee, P.O. Box 467, Columbia, Ill. 62236. To get the documents back, also send a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
