MONROE COUNTY: Levees holding

As flooding threatens part of the Midwest, only one area road has been closed as the result of high water and rural Monroe County is otherwise in good shape.

Monroe County Emergency Management Director Gene Henckler reported Monday morning a levee in Randolph County south of Modoc has begun to leak and local levee authorities are taking steps to repair it.

The leak near Modoc, however, would have no effect on Monroe County, he said."Maeystown Fire Chief Lyndon Prange is watching the progress of the incident," Henckler said. "I am confident that if the levee failed at that location, it would not have an impact on Monroe County. However, we will lend any assistance that they may want."

Last week, Henckler said it appeared likely Bluff Road near the intersection of HH Road would be closed sometime over the weekend, as Fountain Creek is retaining backed-up waters from the Mississippi River.

On Monday, however, he reported the road remains open as the waters receded before reaching 38 feet, the emergency level.

Levee Road between DD Road and Bottom Road in rural Columbia has been closed, though, and the Luhr's Landing egress is under water. Luhr Bros. employees are being shuttled to the barge by boat.

Henckler said on June 18 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projected a 40.2 feet water level for the Mississippi, which was revised downward to 39.7.

"Things appear to be stabilizing," Henckler said.
